Emily Knaapen is a professional oboist, freelancer and oboe teacher based in Madison, WI. She began playing the oboe at age 13 in nearby Muskego, WI under the tutelage of Rita Mitchell and Stephen Colburn. Knaapen earned her Bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music, graduating with the Anne T. Cummins Prize for Excellence in the Humanities. At Eastman she led the Education division of the New Eastman Outreach Orchestra-- a student-run organization aimed at bringing classical music to new audiences at public schools and nontraditional locations. Knaapen then attended the University of Maryland, where she was an active participant in New Lights, a performance group dedicated to creating new concert experiences for their audience. Now a doctoral student and Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Emily freelances throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest.
Emily is passionate about sharing music through outreach and teaching- utilizing her warm personality and strong background in music education to foster a love of music in her students. She helps her students to build a strong foundation in basic oboe playing, while also encouraging students to interpret music in their own way, with some guidance. She is a specialist in combating performance anxiety and helping students to develop an optimistic approach to such a challenging instrument.
Professionally, Emily has held positions in the Green Bay and Sheboygan Symphonies and has appeared with the Dubuque Symphony, FullScore Chamber Orchestra, and Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra.
